The Depletion Problem
Former US Senator Bob Graham spoke on NPR
this morning about the new Energy Bill
that looks ready to become law very shortly. He has a very interesting point of view on this, that the stated goal of encouraging "energy independence" is actually exactly the wrong
thing to be doing, because by focusing on that in the short term, it increases
our dependence on foreign energy sources in the longer term.
Of course, that argument neglects the potential for alternative/renewable energy sources to make a long-term difference; so does the energy bill itself, for the most part. Nevertheless, the point that the more oil we pull out of the ground now, the less there will be for future generations is a good one, and subsidies for exploration and drilling in the US are exactly the wrong approach. At least somebody is thinking over there...
